Environmental permitting has begun in Peru for a project to optimize the processing of natural gas liquids (NGLs).

The work is planned by Transportadora de Gas del Perú (TGP), which transports Camisea natural gas and NGLs to the coast from the Amazon.

The overhaul entails the modification of the drainage system at the number two pressure reduction station in Huancano district, Ica region, according to a supporting technical report (ITS) filed by TGP with the environmental certification service for sustainable investments (Senace).

The goal of the six-month project is to minimize the loss of NGLs and control gas emissions that could generate “explosive atmospheres.”

An ITS is filed when modifications to a project with environmental approval are not expected to cause a significant environmental impact.

Production of NGLs averaged 76,666b/d in 2022 versus 81,117b/d in 2021, according to metrics from hydrocarbons licensing authority Perupetro.

The dip can be attributed partly to maintenance at the Malvinas gas separation plant, which is fed by Camisea. NGLs from the latter are used to produce the bulk of the LPG consumed in Peru, while the rest is imported.

In a related development, the energy and mines ministry declared the end of gas supply emergencies for the Norte and Sur Oeste gas distribution concessions, and the systems that produce, transport and distribute gas.

The ministry had declared the emergencies due to blockades and the occupation of TGP’s Kámani compression plant by protestors amid conflict over the ousting of former president Pedro Castillo.
